Major League Baseball Player. A left-handed pitcher, he spent his entire 15 year career with the Kansas City Royals. A native of southern Indiana, he made his major league debut as a late season call-up on September 23, 1970; Splittorff was to establish himself as a main part of the Royals' pitching rotation and to be member of their playoff squads in the late 1970s as well as the crew which lost to the Phillies in the 1980 World Series. Noted to be particularly effective the Yankees he won 20 games in 1973 and 19 in 1978 and compiled a 166 win and 143 loss lifetime record with a 3.81 ERA and 1,057 strikeouts. Following his 1984 retirement he joined the Royals' broadcast crew and was named to the team's Hall of Fame in 1987. At his death from melanoma he remained his club's leader in a number of categories including games started and wins.
