Bernice Bertmann Whitworth, age 93, died on May 23, 2011 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born November 7, 1917 in Premont, Texas, to Frederick Joseph Bertmann and Mary Agnes Langen. Her parents owned a small store and often took in boarders who attended the nearby Texas A&I college. During her middle school years, Bernice and her sister, Laura, briefly attended Incarnate Word Academy as boarders. It was here, where Bernice developed a strong fondness for the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. During her adult life, she was an active member of the Incarnate Word Academy Associates until her health no longer permitted her to participate. The Bertmann family moved to Kingsville, Texas, in 1918. In 1938 Bernice married Wallace Earl Whitworth, a descendant of a pioneer South Texas family. His Irish ancestors settled in the Power-Hewetson colony near Refugio under a Mexican empresario tract in 1834. Wally and Bernice built a home in 1938 in Corpus Christi, Texas and now have great grandchildren who are now eighth generation Corpus Christians. Bernice and Wally were blessed with 10 children and together they raised them with a strong sense of family values. For 25 years they raised their family in Hillcrest on Van Loan Street, followed by 42 years in their second home on Peerman. While living in Hillcrest, the family were active members of the Corpus Christi Cathedral parish. While on Peerman, they were active in St. Patrick's parish. In January 2006, Bernice moved to Trinity Towers. For as long as she was able, Bernice was active in the Incarnate Word Academy Associates, Sultanas, Theresians of St. Mary, St. Patrick's Altar & Rosary Society, St. Patrick's Caring Friends, and the Nueces County Historical Society.

The Whitworth family warmly remembers the many years of family gatherings every Christmas Eve at Grandma and Grandpa's house, of Grandma's love of life, love of jokes and teasing, of always making company feel welcome and making you feel you had her undivided attention, and, above all, her love of moving furniture (which had been moved between every visit).

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 51 years, Wallace E. Whitworth, a son, Daniel L. Whitworth, her brother William J. Bertmann, and sister Laura E. Teasley.

Survivors include daughters Elizabeth (Betty) Menard (Charles) of Kingwood, Margaret (Peggy) Cunningham (Bruce) of Friendswood, daughter-in-law Mari R. Whitworth of Corpus Christi, and sons Wallace E. (Wally) Whitworth, Jr. (Jean) of Boerne, Robert J. (Bob) Whitworth (Carole) of Brackettville, William B. (Bill) Whitworth (Cheryl) of Beeville, Thomas M. (Tom) Whitworth (Mary Ellen) of Houston, Gerald P. (Jerry) Whitworth (Diane) of Corpus Christi, Joseph R. (Joe) Whitworth (Shelley) of Sugar Land, and John F. (Jack) Whitworth (Barbara) of San Antonio, 23 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Seaside Funeral Home with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening at the Seaside Funeral Home Chapel.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
