American Folk Figure. Ensign, United States Navy (Naval Reserve), World War II. He passed up a discharge so that he could stay in the Navy. He had 373.4 hours of flight time, 65.9 in TBM/TBF Avengers alone. He was pilot of TBM Avenger torpedo bomber "FT-3" [TBM-1C - BuNo 45714] which was part of the Flight 19 squadron that famously disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle during a routine 5-ship overwater navigation training mission out of Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
