U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1822, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Cambridge, Maryland, in 1824. Moving to Louisiana in 1825, he engaged in sugar planting, returned to Maryland in 1828 and resumed the practice of law in Chestertown. He was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates (1831-35), elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Congresses, serving 1835-39 and elected to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving 1841-43. In 1843, he was elected as a Whig to the U.S. Senate in 1843, reelected as a Democrat in 1949 and served until his death.
