U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Washington College, in 1828, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1829 and commenced to practice law in Chestertown, Maryland. Entering politics, he was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates in 1834, served in the Maryland State Senate, (1836-44) and was a presidential elector on the Whig tickets, (1840, 44). In 1855, he was elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1859. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law, was appointed associate judge of the second Maryland judicial district by Maryland Governor Augustus Bradford, in 1864 and served until death.
