US Congressman. Born in Cologne, Prussia, he was educated at the University of Bonn, immigrated to the United States in 1848 and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1850. There he was appointed United States Marshal for New Mexico in 1857, became one of the owners of the Santa Fe Weekly Gazette in 1858, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1861 and commenced to practice law in Santa Fe. He served as adjutant on the staff of General Canby at the Battle of Valverde in 1862, Adjutant General of New Mexico (1861-65, 1867-68) and New Mexico Attorney General, (1862-67). In 1867, he presented credentials as a Democratic Delegate-elect to the Fortieth Congress and served until 1869. After his term he served as a commissioner to revise and codify the laws of New Mexico and practiced law until his death at age 44 in Tome, New Mexico.
