Daniel Birch Larsen, 85, passed away in Payson, UT June 4, 2011 of multiple health complications.

He was the first son born to Gladys Eola Tuft and Daniel Jones Larsen on April 5, 1926 in Monroe, Sevier Co, UT.

As a young boy and during depression years, he herded sheep with his brother, Ole, up and down the lanes of Monroe. He attended grade school, junior high, and high school in Monroe and served as student body president his senior year.

He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. He, with his family, moved to South Texas – the Rio Grande Valley – where he owned and operated drug stores along with several partners for 35 years. He loved his many customers and partners. In 1992 he sold his businesses and home in order to serve a Church assignment to Portugal. After this assignment he returned to live in Joseph, Utah where he lived until moving to Santaquin 6 years ago. During the time he lived in Joseph, he also did some pharmacy relief work around the Sevier County area.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities – as a young missionary to Brazil from 1948 to 1950, and later in life as mission president to Spain, Barcelona, regional representative to Portugal, and as president of the missionary training center in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He served as the first state president in the Rio Grande Valley and in many other positions. But his great love was teaching the gospel to anyone who would listen. This missionary spirit was always a part of his life.

He had a great appreciation for men who served in the armed forces for the United States and had a great interest in the wars of the world. He was unable to serve himself because of health problems.

He married Melba Joan Parker in the Manti Temple in 1951. He is survived by his wife, children – Christine Hildreth, Dillon, MT; Charles Larsen (Leanne) Littleton, CO, Ann Kator (Greg) Boise, ID, Kathy Larsen Darquea (Frank) Santaquin, UT, Daniel "Bud" Larsen (Dalynda) Temecula, CA, and Tom Larsen (Jenifer) Santaquin, UT. He was the proud grandfather of 24 and the great grandfather of 16. He is survived by brothers and sisters Kay Hallows Brown, St. George, UT, Marilyn Larsen, Payson, UT, Frank Larsen, Washington, UT, Vivan Larsen, Onalaska, TX, and David Larsen, Payson, UT.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Donna, Karma, and brother, Ole.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 in the Santaquin 3rd Ward LDS Chapel located at 45 South 500 West, Santaquin, where friends may call for viewing on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
