US Congressman, US Senator. He was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1855, and established a law practice in Tully, New York. In 1860 he was elected as District Attorney for Onondaga County, New York as a Republican, and served in that office until 1863. He served as a delegate to the 1876 Republican Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, and cast his vote to nominate Rutherford B. Hayes as the party's Presidential candidate. The same year he was elected to represent New York's 25th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1877 until he resigned in 1887, having been elected as a Republican Senator from New York to the United States Senate. He served a single six-year term from 1887 to 1893, and was defeated in his bid for re-election by Democrat Edward Murphy Jr. He returned to private law practice for the rest of his days, and he passed away in Syracuse, New York in 1914 at the age of seventy-nine.
