Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1861, being mustered in as a Private in Company G, 4th Maryland Volunteer Infantry on November 16, 1861. His regiment failed to be recruited to full strength, and was disbanded in May 1862. He was eventually transferred to Company H, 3rd Maryland Volunteer Infantry that month. He served with his unit through it's participation in the Battles of Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness ad Spotsylvania. On June 24, 1864 he was transferred to Company A, and was with the Company as it fought in the July 3-, 1864 Battle of the Crater near Petersburg, Virginia. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action that day, with his citation reading "After the color sergeant had been shot down, seized the colors and planted them on the enemy's works during the charge." He would go on to be promoted to Sergeant, serve thought the rest of the conflict, and was honorably mustered out on July 31, 1865. His Medal was awarded to him on July 23, 1896.
