Delaware Governor. He was a distant cousin of U.S. President James K. Polk and served twice as Governor of Delaware. He was a member of the Delaware State Representative (1814-19, 1824-27) and a member of the Delaware State Senate (1825-27). In 1827, he was elected as a Federalist the 20th Governor of Delaware, serving until 1830. After his term he was a member of the Delaware State Senate in 1835, when appointed again the 31st Governor of Delaware, serving (1836-37). After his second term as Governor, he was a member of the Delaware State Senate until 1839. His final public office was as Register of Wills for Dover Delaware (1843-48) and as Collector for the Port of Wilmington (1850-53).
