US Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and commenced to practice law in Talladega, Alabama. With the advent of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant of Company C, 51st Regiment, Alabama Infantry. After the war, he returned to his legal practice and served as judge of the tenth judicial circuit of Alabama, (1868-73). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C. and later was appointed a clerk in the US Treasury Department.
