Also served as a Member of the North Carolina State Senate in 1822, Delegate to the North Carolina State Constitutional Convention in 1835, Signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836, Delegate to the Texas Republic Constitutional Convention in 1836, and Texas Republic Secretary of State in 1836.
