US Congressman. Born in Alabama, he moved to Mississippi as a young man, and attended the University of Mississippi. After graduation he read law, and was admitted to the Mississippi State Bar Association in 1895. He established a law practice in Friars Point, Mississippi, and was elected the town's Mayor in 1896. He held that office until 1898, when he resigned to enlist in the United States Army for the Spanish-American War. He was mustered into the 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, and saw service and combat duty in the Philippine Islands. Discharged in 1900, he returned to Mississippi and established a practice in Iuka. Eight years later he moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas. He served in the Arkansas State Assembly, and was the State Speaker of the House in 1915. In 1922 he was elected as a Democrat to represent Arkansas' 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Assuming the seat in Match 1923, he served only two months before he suddenly died in office in Hot Springs.
