US Congressman. He attended the Michigan Agricultural College, taught school for several years, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1881 and commenced to practice law in Oxford, Michigan, in 1882. He was prosecuting attorney of Lake County, (1886-88), when he resigned and moved to Butte, Montana, in 1889. He was a member of the Montana State House of Representatives in 1897. In 1899, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress, serving until 1901. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 49.
