He was the son of Dr. John and Margaret Sloan (Quay) Dunovant.

He was married to Mary McLure Lowry Dunovant who was the daughter of Samuel Lowery and Susanna Miller, who was a prominent planter in the York District, SC.

They are known to have nine children and the following are the known names: Adelia A., William, Mary, Susan L., John, Margaret Quay (married William Edward Calhoun), Kate Leslie and Alexander Quay.

A.Q. was a planter and a merchant and during the 1850s, he served as a member of the South Carolina Legislature.

A.Q. and his brother, R.G.M. Dunovant, were both elected as delegates to the Secession Convention and both signed the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession.

A.Q. also was an aide-de-camp to the Governor of South Carolina with the rank of Colonel.

He was a big investor in the government of the Confederate States. Tax rolls for Colorado Co., TX for 1864 indicate he was taxed for Confederate Treasury Notes.

South Carolina was devastate by The War and A.Q. realized that he and his family would never be able to re-build their life. So, in the Winter of 1865, Colonel Dunovant, his wife and surviving children, Adelia, William, Margaret and Mary, left behind everything and came to Texas where he owned property before The War at Eagle Lake, Colorado Co., TX.

Due to the harsh conditions during Reconstruction, poor health and malarial climate, Colonel Dunovant died on Monday, 11 Nov 1868 in Colorado Co., TX. His wife, Mary died ca. 1871.
