U.S. Congressman. Successful in agricultural pursuits, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and never practiced law. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1848-53) and comptroller general of the South Carolina State (1853-57). In 1859, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress and served until resigning in 1860. During the Civil War, he was elected Colonel in command of the 4th South Carolina Regiment, but resigned before the regiment was called into service. After the war, he engaged in mercantile pursuits until his death at age 52.
