Virginia Governor. He attended Brownsburg Academy, became Deputy Clerk of Nottoway County, Virginia and served of Private in the 12th Virginia Infantry, Confederate Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he studied law and began practicing law in Nottoway County, in 1867. He was the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Nottoway, in 1870, the first County Judge of Nottoway County, (1890-92) and was a member of the Virginia Senate, (1899-1910). In 1910 he was elected as a Democrat the 46th Governor of Virginia, serving until 1914. During his administration, he pressed to widen the scope of agricultural demonstration work, promoting progress in scientific agriculture and helping to disseminate knowledge to farmers. After leaving office, he became president of the Citizens’ Bank and returned to his legal practice until his death.
