Actor. He was one of the most popular comedic actors in France. He began career as accompanist for his singer father. Fernand Joseph Désiré Contandin, better known professionally as Fernandel. His was comedian, whose visual trademarks were comic facial contortions and a wide, toothy grin. Leaving a banking career, he first performed in vaudeville shows and was a pantomime comedian in Parisian music-hall revues. Throughout his career, he appear in stage performance that were comedic or drama. The 1930 film "White and Black" initiated a 40-year motion-picture career, which included more than 100 films, seven of which were directed by the French master of comedy drama Marcel Pagnol. Among his films was a series of film starting in 1952 with "The Little World of Don Camillo," the first of a series of pictures about the hot-tempered priest. He married and had two daughters and a son, who became an actor and appeared in a couple of film with him. His last film was made in 1969.
