U.S. Congressman. Moving to Nevada, in 1870, he studied law but never practiced, engaged in newspaper work and was a member of the Nevada State Senate, (1872-79). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Cleveland national bank examiner for Nevada, Utah, California and Colorado, serving (1886-90). Nominated as a candidate for election to the Fifty-third Congress in 1882, he died before the election at age 56.
