He was commissioned an Officer in Company C, Massachusetts 46th Infantry Regiment on October 15, 1862. He mustered out on July 25, 1863. He was the son of James and Sarah Johnson Campbell. According to his death record, he died of Pneumonia and Mitral Regurgitation of the Heart. He married Nancy Cowles in Westfield, Massachusetts on June 11, 1848. He married, second, Mary Jane Dolbey, in Westfield, Massachusetts on April 6, 1876.
