US Congressman, US Senator, 4th Vermont Governor. He was elected to represent Vermont's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1791 to 1797, and 1801 to 1803. He was then elected as a Senator from Vermont to the United States Senate, serving from 1803 to 1807. Finally, he served as Vermont's fourth Governor from 1807 to 1808.
