U.S. Congressman. He pursued an academic course and engaged in the cultivation as a rice planter on the Waccamaw River. Entering politics, he was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives (1796-98). In 1799, he was elected as a Federalist to the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Congresses, serving until 1805. After leaving Congress, he was again a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives (1806-13), elected to the Fourteenth Congress, serving (1815-17), and a member of the South Carolina State Senate, serving from 1818 until his death.
