Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery while a Private in Company G, 12th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry for action at Battery Gregg, near Petersburg, Virgina on April 2, 1865. His citation reads simply "Capture of flag." He was one of five 12th West Virginia soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for their bravery during the war (the others being Corporal Andrew O. Apple, 2nd Lieutenant Josiah M. Curtis, 2nd Lieutenant James R. Durham, and Private Joseph McCauslin.
