Mrs. Stefan suffered multiple fractures of both legs, internal injuries and shock in the accident that happened Saturday three miles west of Jessup, Iowa, on Highway 20.
She was on her way to Park Ridge, Ill., to spend Thanksgiving with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Askren, and family. She left Norfolk Friday and was traveling alone.
Highway patrolmen said Mrs. Stefan was traveling east and the truck driven by Alvin Hurlbut, 24, Cedar Rapids, was just starting to turn west when the collision occurred."
Hurlbut was injured. A passenger riding with him, was treated for minor injuries and released.
Mrs. Stefan’s car was demolished.
Mrs. Askren arrived Saturday afternoon at her mother’s bedside, and a son, Dr. Karl Stefan, Washoupal, Wash., arrived in Waterloo early Sunday morning.
Mrs. Stefan, the former Miss Ida Rosenbaum, and Karl Stefan were married Jan. 30, 1907, in Omaha, shortly after he returned from the Philippines where he served in the telegraph division of the Philippine constabulary.
They came to Norfolk about 45 years ago, Mr. Stefan then being a telegraph operator for The Norfolk Daily News, of which he later became city editor. He served in Congress from January, 1935, until his death Oct. 3, 1951.
Mrs. Stefan was an active member Trinity Episcopal Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Askren; her son, Dr. Karl; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. R. G. Stroble of Omaha, Miss Helena Rosenbaum of Dayton Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Harriet O’Shea of Tulsa, Okla., and two brothers, Franklin Ollie Rosenbaum of Rapid City.
Mrs. Stefan was preceded in death by her husband, one son and one sister.
Members of the family were expected to arrive Monday afternoon in Norfolk. Funeral arrangements will be completed after their arrival.
