Minnesota Governor, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Served as the 29th Governor of Minnesota (1955 to 1961) and the 16th U.S. Secretary of Agriculture (1961 to 1969) under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Graduate of the University of Minnesota in 1940 where he quarterbacked Minnesota's national champion football teams. Only person to be nominated for Governor of Minnesota 5 times (lost in 1952, elected in 1954, re-elected in 1956 and 1958, defeated in 1960). Started Walter Mondale's political career by appointing him Minnesota Attorney General in 1959 when the incumbent, Miles Lord, resigned.
