SCOTT JR., J. GREGG passed away on Saturday June 25, 2011 at the age of 82. He graduated from Ensley High School. While in high school, he was very active in the Boy Scouts, being a leader at Camp Arrowhead and receiving Scouting's, highest honor, The Order of The Arrow. He attended Auburn University, were he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He was also a first string starter on the 1948 Auburn wrestling team that won the South Eastern Conference championship and was rated number seven in the country. After leaving Auburn, he went to work for his parent's real estate company, which specialized in property management and insurance. After getting married in 1951, he later took a job with Jemison Realty Company in their commercial rental department. After about two years, he returned to his parents company, which had been reorganized to include his uncle, J. Miles Sprague, and was renamed Scott- Sprague Realty Co. The new company also became involved in real estate sales, remodeling and some home building. Mr. Scott became a real estate broker and was put in charge of the whole operation. It was during this time that he met his lifelong friend and partner, H. Albert Awtrey. Albert was a fledging homebuilder and Gregg was a fledging realtor. With Uncle Miles help, they formed their first homebuilding company. Over the years that followed, they built hundreds of homes, many apartment buildings, and developed numerous sub-divisions all over the metro Birmingham area. In 1964, Mr. Scott was offered and accepted an offer from Home Federal Savings and Loan to train for Senior Management. He subsequently became Senior Vice -President in charge of lending, and served as second in command behind the President. At the end of 1996 he retired from what had come to be Alabama Federal and then Secor Bank due to mergers, so that he could pursue other interest. He subsequently got back in the home building, land development and commercial construction business until he retired at the age of 79. In his early years as a homebuilder, he was very active in the Birmingham Association of Homebuilders, holding most of its positions of leadership. He and Albert Awtrey built the Association's first Scholarship House in 1961, and Gregg was the Parade of Homes chairman in 1963. He was rewarded with several awards by the Association, including being named" Builder of the Year" in 1962, receiving an Award of Special Merit in 1964, and in 1996 was inducted into the Association's Hall Of Fame. Over the years, Mr. Scott was a member of several business and social clubs, including the Civitan Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club, both Ensley and Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, both Birmingham Board of Realtors and the Birmingham Association of Home Builders, the Hoover Country Club, The Relay House, and The Club. He and his wife were members of the Shades Mountain Independent Church. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Doris Burchfield Scott, and his parents, J. Gregg Scott, Sr. and Florella B. Scott. He is survived by his two wonderful daughters, Rebecca "Becky" S. Wiggins, and Carol S. Parks and his much loved brother and sister- in- law, Richard 'Dick" and Nancy Scott. In addition he leaves behind five grand-children and four great grandchildren, a few cousins, and many nieces and nephews. He also desired to especially mention his two-sons-in-laws, Victor "Vic" Wiggins and Richard "Mike" Parks, who were an integral part of his life for many years. Funeral services will be held at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel on Tuesday June 28, 2011 at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior to service. He will be buried next to his wife, Doris, at Elmwood Cemetery.
