Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 94th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, then as the acting Asistant Inspector General on the staff of Maj. General Gordon Granger. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct at Mobile, Ala.".
