Mahaffey, Jane Ann
passed away peacefully, at age 71, on September 29, 2010. Jane was admired and loved as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter. Blessed with beauty, a keen intellect, and a spirited sense of humor, she graced the lives of those who knew her. Her generosity was her trademark and she showered her loved ones not only with gifts, but also, with extravagant love. She is finally reunited with the husband she adored, General Fred K. Mahaffey, who preceded her in death 24 years ago. As an Army wife, she modeled a selfless grace that was an inspiration to many other young women who were waiting for their husbands to return from war. She easily adapted to the nomadic lifestyle of a military family, and transformed housing quarters into warm, laughter-filled homes. By the time she was 22 years old, she was also the proud mother of four daughters. Her girls, Lorrie Dablow, Selene Pearson, Julie Augeri, and Melissa Jansen and their husbands, Patrick, Duane, Rich, and Paul have been the grateful recipients of her unconditional love. Throughout her life, she remained very close to her beloved siblings and, in her later years, delighted in each one of her seven wonderful grandchildren. During her years as a military wife, she became an accomplished author, editor, and advocate. In Washington D.C., she championed better health and dental benefits for military dependents and veterans. Her articles in area publications helped to call attention to the needs of those who served their country in military service. After her husband passed away, she co-authored a book with Bob Ancel, about the future leadership of the military, called Who Will Lead? A celebration of Jane's life and legacy will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2010. The service will be at Scottsdale Christian Church, 7934 E Oak Street, Scottsdale, AZ. Immediately following the service, friends and family are invited for a reception at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E Indian School Road. Jane will be laid to rest beside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Indian School Mortuary.
