US Congressman. Elected to represent Michigan's 14th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1935 to 1947, and 1949 to 1961. He was defeated as a Democrat in 1946. Also served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Michigan in 1936, 1940, 1952, and 1956, and Democratic Candidate for Delegate to the Michigan State Constitutional Convention from 1st Senatorial District in 1961. Also an author, he wrote the amendment which inserted the words "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
