U.S. Senator. In 1909, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, was a railroad car checker (1890-97), clerk in the coal business (1897-1903) and was associated with the Ford Motor Company, (1903-19). He was president of the Bank of Detroit, director of the Detroit Trust Company, commissioner of street railways (1913-15), commissioner of the metropolitan police department (1916-18) and Mayor of Detroit, (1919-22). In 1922, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 64.
