Elected Pitkin County treasurer, then county assessor. Moved to Denver. Named Chief Clerk of the Colorado State Board of Land Commissioners, 1911-1917; deputy State Auditor, 1917; and, Deputy Secretary of State, 1917-1920. Served as Deputy City Auditor of Denver from 1921 to 1931. Was appointed City Auditor in 1931, and won election for five consective terms and retired from that positon in 1955. Father of Colorado Governor Stephen L. R. Mchicols, and Denver Mayor William H. McNichols, Jr.
