He was the author of 24 books indluding "A More Godly Country," "View From This Wilderness: American Literature as History," "To Feed Their Hopes: A Book of American Women," and "The Winters of That Country: Tales of the Man-made Seasons." A life long Communist, he was blacklisted from 1951 until 1960. His name at birth was Julian Lawrence Shapiro. He was the husband of screenwriter Marguerite Roberts.
