** CSA Colonel ***
Co. A., 1st Regiment NC Militia from 1861 - 1865

William Albert Jones Sr. was born 1824 in Edgecombe County, NC, the 3rd of 5 known surviving children (2 boys/3 girls) born to wealthy planter Frederick Jones, Jr. (1798-1839) and his wife, Sarah Rhodes Cherry (1802-1873).

He was the paternal grandson of Frederick Jones Sr. (1754-1808) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Best; and gr-grandson of John Jones & Nancy "Rachel" Norris, all of Martin County, NC. He was the maternal grandson of Aaron Cherry & Elizabeth Holmes Knight of Edgecombe County.

William's siblings were all prominent in Edgecombe County. His sister, Amanda Malvina Jones (1820-1884), who never married, ran an exclusive boarding school for young ladies at the old Jones homeplace in Edgecombe. Sarah Caroline "Carrie" Jones (1823-1902) became the 2nd wife of Elder David House of Greenville, a minister of the Free Will Baptist Church. Catherine Emily Jones (1827-1889) married James Henry Dozier of Edgecombe and was mother to 5 children. Dr. John Wesley Jones was a noted physician in Tarboro and married Eugenia Helen Jeffreys, by whom he had 3 children.

William was a graduate of University of North Carolina (UNC) and was a wealthy farmer in Conetoe. On May 31, 1855, the 31-year old William married 19-year old Virginia Knight Staton of Edgecombe, daughter of Simmons Bythel Staton (deceased) and Drocella Knight. Virginia was his 2nd cousin, twice removed. They would become parents to 4 known children:

* Frederick Jones (ca. 1856 - died young)
* Annie Druscilla Jones (1858-1923)
* Dr. Claude Melnott Jones (1861-1926)
* William Albert Jones, Jr. (1863-1940)

When Civil War broke out, William enlisted and became a Colonel in Company A of the 1st NC Regiment. Following the war, William would later serve as Clerk of Superior Court.

William A. Jones Sr. died in 1879 at the age of 54. His wife of 24 years never remarried and survived him 28 years, passing in 1907, a few weeks shy of her 71st birthday.

As for his children, William Jr. married, but had no children, and is buried here in Greenwood. Annie Druscilla Jones became the 2nd wife of CSA Lt. Elisha Cromwell Knight, of Edgecombe, and was mother to 2 known children. Dr. Claude M. Jones removed to Pitt County where he married Mary Eliza Ward and was father to 4 known children. He had a thriving practice and is remembered as having one of the first automobiles in Grimesland! He was one of the first with telephone service and the first with indoor plumbing. Sadly, he died in a car wreck in 1926 at about age 65.
