U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Williams College, in 1830, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and proceeded to practice in Detroit, Michigan. He was Detroit City Attorney, in 1834, a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1838 and elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving (1841-43). After leaving Congress, he was Michigan Attorney General, (1855-61), elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Kinsley S. Bingham in 1861 and served until his death.
