U.S. Congressman. During the War of 1812, he served as a Captain in the 3rd Artillery, U.S. Army and after the war, he was a Major assistant inspector general, attached to the staff of General Scott on the Niagara frontier, (1813-21). He then was paymaster and Indian agent at Green Bay, Wisconsin, (1821-22) and register of the land at Detroit, Territory of Michigan, (1823-37). He also was the commissioner for the land claims at Detroit and Mayor of Detroit, (1827-28). In 1829, he was elected a Delegate from the Territory of Michigan to the Twenty-first Congress and served until his resignation in 1831. He was president of the Michigan Central Railroad Company, 1835 and a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1841. After retiring from politics, he was active in pursuits on his estate. He died at age 67 while on a summer visit to West Virginia.
