US Congressman. He attended Georgetown College and the United States Military Academy. In 1844 he joined his father in the carpet manufacturing industry, remaining active in Stephen Sanford and Sons until his death. In 1868 he was elected as a Republican to the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1869 to 1871. he did not run for reelection, and returned to his carpet manufacturing business. In 1876 he was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention. For many years he was an officer of Amsterdam's Board of Trade. Sanford was a major donor to civic causes in Amsterdam and Montgomery County, including the Amsterdam Free Library. Stephen Sanford and Sons became one of America's largest carpet producers, eventually merging with another company to become Bigelow-Sanford, and then Bigelow Carpets, the forerunner of today's Mohawk Group, which manufactures carpet under brand names including Bigelow, Durkan, and Mohawk. Stephen Sanford was the son of John Sanford (1803-1857) and the father of John Sanford (1851-1939), both of whom also served in Congress.
