Engebret I Roe, retired farmer and Kathryn resident for the past 19 years, passed away at his home here last Sunday afternoon, July 19, at the age of 65 years, 6 months and 16 days. Direct cause of his death was a heart attack, although he had been in very poor health, being under the doctor’s care for the past eight months. The past weeks of extremely hot weather had been very hard on him and the end came during the severe electrical and wind storm we had last Sunday.
Engebret I Roe was born in Tyldalen, Osterdalen, Norway on January 3, 1871. At the age of 15 years he came to America with his parents. They settled on a farm about 3 and ½ miles south east of Kathryn.Mr. Roe attended the Dahl school and was confirmed in the Dally Congregation by Reverend Botne, and grew to manhood in this community. In 1906 he was married to Oline Eggen. To this union were born five children; Sigrid, Ella, Ida, Engvald and Clara. He and his family to Kathryn in the fall of 1917, where they have resided since. In 1919 his son, Engvald passed away. One year later his wife also passed away.He had been in failing health since last winter, and passed away at his home July 19, 1936. Mr. Roe was an active member of the Waldheim Church since it was founded, and was treasurer at the time of his death. He had served as a member of the local school board for 30 years. He was affiliated with the local Sons of Norway Lodge, being a charter member.Four daughters remain to mourn his departure: Sigrid, Ella, Ida, and Clara, of Kathryn; two sisters also remain, Mrs. E. G. Strom, Kathryn; Ms. Ingrid Ekern, Beulah, ND.Engebret, as he was known and called by all who knew him, was a person with a cheerful personality, meeting his friends with a smile and almost always trying to play little harmless jokes on them. He was held in high esteem by his fellow townsmen and will be greatly missed by them, but not near as much as his four surviving daughters.Funeral services were held both in the church here in Kathryn and at the Waldheim Church east of town, Wednesday afternoon, July 22. Rev. Mykland the regular Waldheim pastor, officiated, assisted by Rev. Bue of Kathryn. His earthly remains were laid to rest the family lot, beside his wife and son in the Waldheim Cemetery. The pallbearers were his old boyhood friends: Holstien Olsberg and Oral Rue of Valley City, and Rasmus Olsberg, Ole B. Thorud, Tom Norgaard and Severn Prestrude.Published in the Kathryn Rcorder, Kathryn, North Dakota, July 24, 1936
