North Dakota Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Mayville State Normal School, in 1895, from the University of North Dakota, in 1901 and then engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1917, he was elected as a Republican the 12th Governor of North Dakota, serving until 1921, when he was the first American Governor ever successfully recalled from office. During his tenure, women were granted the right to vote, a state bank and a state industrial commission were established, a graduated income tax was initiated and the state's land registration code was revised. His dismissal resulted in a private business led movement to press due the economic loss in the agricultural sectors. After leaving office, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1923-41). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death at age 72.
