Betty Adkisson Stewart, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, while traveling in Switzerland.

She was born July 21, 1923, to John and Eoline Adkisson, and grew up in Centerville, TX. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in 1945.

She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Col. (U.S. Army, Ret.) Claude C. Stewart and her parents.

She leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia Lane and Morton Lane of Chicago, Janet Stewart and George Pitlik of The Woodlands, and Sally Wilson and Greg Wilson of Austin; eight grandchildren, Megan, David and Rhodri Lane, Nell and Greer Kennedy, Jack, Will and Nash Wilson.

A resident of the Army Residence Community in San Antonio for the last eight years, Betty and Claude lived in College Station, TX, from 1972 until 1996. In the 30 years of her husband's active military service, she lived in Europe, the Caribbean and various U.S. locales. Betty was cheerful and optimistic with every major move of household and children, and her creative talents made every new house a home. She loved travel and welcomed the opportunity to develop new friendships and experiences. Betty possessed a wonderful sense of humor and love of laughter. Her many friends and family will fondly remember her delight in sharing funny stories — often at her own expense. She was independent-minded and forthright and, with her kindhearted and generous nature, she earned the affection and admiration of all who knew her.

Betty was a member of the Methodist Church, Delta Gamma and the Daughters of the American Revolution. During her years in College Station, she was active in the Woman's Club, the Officers' Wives' Club, the Ladies Golf Association and other civic and volunteer organizations. She was an enthusiastic traveler and an avid reader, Bridge player and patron of the arts, as well as devoted caretaker of her husband in his final years.

A Memorial Service for Betty Stewart will be held at 10:00 A.M. on July 23, 2004 at the Army Residence Community (A.R.C.) Chapel with a reception following in the A.R.C. Sky Lounge. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty Stewart's memory to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.
