U.S. Congressman. He attended college at Durhamville, Tennessee, and was employed there in his early youth as a clerk in a country store. Moving to Missouri in 1867, he settled near Kennett, Dunkin County and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He also was in various Missouri cities, engaging in transportation on the Mississippi River, the dry-goods business and in the buying and selling of grain, until 1882. Entering politics, he served as delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1880 and was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving from 1887, until his death. On the day of his death from a flu pandemic in 1890, he was unanimously nominated as the Democratic candidate for reelection to the fifty-second Congress.
