US Congressman. Born in Springboro, Pennsylvania, he moved to Minnesota in 1868, graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1875, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice in Princeton, Wisconsin. Relocating to Iowa, he taught at various schools (1876-80), before moving to West Union, Iowa, where he became publisher of the Fayette County Union in 1883. He also served as superintendent of the tenth division, railway mail service, St. Paul, Minnesota, (1885-89), then returned to West Union, Iowa and resumed his newspaper pursuits. In 1891, he elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he engaged in the real estate and banking until his death at age 79.
