JB Madison Leftwich of Lebanon passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Pavilion surrounded by his loving family. The family will be receiving friends at Sellars Funeral Home in Lebanon from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2011. The Memorial Service, conducted by Dr. Mike Ripski and Brother David Hesson, is 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church.

He was born in Buffalo Valley, TN on November 26, 1919. He graduated from Cumberland University in Lebanon where he was editor of the student newspaper. It was there that he met his wife of 72 years Jo Doris (Prichard) Leftwich. Following graduation he began a 40 year career at Castle Heights Military Academy where he taught math and was advisor to the student publications. The Cavalier (student newspaper) was the winner of numerous awards and many of his former editors and writers went on to successful careers in journalism.

After retiring from Castle Heights, he continued his association with newspapers and was for many years a columnist for the Lebanon Democrat. He managed a family real estate business and was active in the community. In 1980 he was chairman of the board for the Lebanon Wilson county Chamber of Commerce and in 1993 he was awarded life membership. He continued to love his association with former cadets at Castle Heights and was recognized and awarded the outstanding teacher award. His former editors and students are endowing a scholarship in his honor to be awarded to a student at Cumberland University. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was actively involved.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Lynda (Glyn) Newton, Jim (Page) Leftwich, Barbara (Jim) Froula, and Jack Leftwich. He has nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
