U.S. Congressman. He studied law, graduated from the law department of the University of Nebraska in 1904, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Livingston, Montana in 1905. He also engaged in stock raising, ranching, and banking, was judge of the sixth judicial district of Montana, in 1912 and a member of the Montana State House of Representatives (1917-18). In 1937, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses and served until his death.
