Lloyd C. Hughes of Fairfax, VA, formerly of Colorado Springs, Colorado, died peacefully February 17, 2011. Friends and family are invited to attend services and burial with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, July 28, 2011, beginning 11:00 am at the Ft. Myer Memorial Chapel.

Lloyd was born April 10, 1920, in Wayne County, Iowa. He attended Drake University and Iowa State University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He earned his pilot wings and Second Lieutenant bars February 1944. During WWII he flew B-24 bombers in the Pacific. After WWII, he became a meteorologist, served with the Air Weather Service for the remainder of his 31 years in the Air Force, and continued flying. Besides the B-24 "Liberator", he flew the C-47 "Gooney Bird" and T-33 "T-Bird" jet trainer. He was an Air War College graduate whose awards and decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. His assignments took him to New Guinea, the Philippines, and Australia during WWII; then Mississippi; Alaska; Illinois; Germany (twice); Washington; Thule, Greenland; the Pentagon; and finally, McGuire AFB, New Jersey, as Commander, 15th Weather Squadron (MAC). His most memorable military moments were his involvement with the Cuban missile crisis and with a space weather office prior to the establishment of the National Reconnaissance Office. He also had one regret: Due to extremely foggy conditions, he and his crews were unable to fly their B-24s under the Golden Gate Bridge when departing San Francisco, ferrying the bombers to the Pacific theater.

He began his retirement in Colorado Springs in 1974, most recently living at Liberty Heights where he had fantastic views of both Pikes Peak and his beloved Air Force Academy. He attended AFA football games with longtime friends and enjoyed RVing trips which took him to Mexico for the winter, Arizona for spring baseball, the Rockies to fish, and New Mexico to visit his dear friend Harriet.

He was happiest when RVing in his "diesel pusher" and playing cribbage or chickenfoot with family. In 2008, he moved into assisted living in Virginia, closer to his daughter Sharon and her family. Until his death he continued to enjoy air shows, Washington DC sightseeing, and visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As his health began to deteriorate, he always said, he was "still good for visiting." Devoted to his family and his country, he was a kind, polite, humorous, and patriotic man who will be greatly missed. He was a member of the Order of Daedalians, Scottish Rite (32nd degree Mason), Military Officers Association of America, and the Elks.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd D. and Fern LaRue Hughes; siblings, William Hughes and Beverly Perkins Lumetta; his wife of 28 years, Betty Geraldine Gilley, and wife of 20 years, Eva Alice Scariano. Survivors include his sister, Carolyn Kirkwood; six children and their spouses, Douglas Hughes, Sharon Kullander (Dennis), Richard Scariano (Sharon), Susan Postlewate(Gene), Lisa Russell (Michael), and Shelly Scariano; eight grandchildren, Beverly (Hughes) Harris, Erin Kullander, Tammy (Kullander) Vernon, Ted Scariano, Todd Scariano, Nathan Russell, Emily (Russell) Smith, and Matthew Russell; and four great-grandchildren, Katie Harris, Joshua Lloyd Kullander, Taylor Vernon, and Alex Vernon.
