Services for Robert Alexander Hefner Jr, who died Monday, will be at All Souls Episcopal Church at noon today with private interment at Rose Hill Mausoleum under the direction Hahn-Street, Cook & Draper Funeral Home.

Hefner, 79, an independent oil man, was a member of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and one-time president of the Oklahoma Heritage Association.

He was born Jun 2, 1907 in Beaumont TX and moved to Ardmore with his parents in 1909. His father, Robert A Hefner, was a pioneer Oklahoma oil man and political leader.

Hefner graduated with honors from Stanford University and studied law at Harvard University before receiving his law degree from the University of Oklahoma Law School. He opened a private law practice in Oklahoma City in 1931 and later served 2 years in Washington DC as assistant to the counsel for the Reconstruction Finance Commission.

Before returning to Oklahoma in 1946 to assume management of the Hefner Co, founded by his father in 1919, he practiced oil and gas law in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

Hefner founded and managed Hefner Production Co. Under his direction, the Hefner companies built reserves of more than 12 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 3 million barrrels of oil. He was active in forming the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association and served as a member of its board of directors and was named vice president of the Independent Petroleum Association of America.

The Oklahoma Petroleum Association named Hefner as 1976's Outstanding Oklahoma Oil Man.

Hefner was instrumental in arranging the donation of the Hefner family home to the Oklahoma Heritage Association for use as the Oklahoma Heritage Center. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Delta Upsilon Fraternity and the Oklahoma Bar Association, and was active as a fund raiser for the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife, Elinor; son, Robert III; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to the Oklahoma Heritage Association, All Souls Episcopal Church or Boy Scouts of America, Last Frontier Council, all of Oklahoma City or the charity of the donor's choice.
