United States Marine Corps General. Commissioned a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1858, he rose in rank until he was promoted to Colonel and ninth Commandant of the Marines in 1891. He remained as Commandant as the rank was raised to Brigadier General in 1899 and Major General in 1902. Under his leadership the Corps more than tripled in size and saw action in the Spanish-American War and the Peking Relief Expedition. He retired in 1903.
