Colorado Governor. During the Civil War, he served as a Private in the 20th Alabama Light Artillery Regiment, Confederate Army. After the war, he attending Iowa Agricultural College, Cornell College New York and the Freiberg School of Mines in Germany. Returning to America, he settled in Colorado, became a partner in the Omaha and Grant Smelting Company and served as vice president of the Denver National Bank. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat the 3rd Governor of Colorado, serving until 1885. During his term, he developed and expanded Colorado's mining industry, advocated legislation that authorized the construction of the Colorado state capitol building in Denver and improved Colorado's trade industries. Not seeking reelection, he returned to his business interests, served as president of the Denver Board of Education, (1892-97) and was a trustee to the University of Denver, (1884-1904). He died of heart disease at age 63.
