U.S. Senator. He graduated from Richmond College in 1871, from the law department of the University of Missouri in 1873, was admitted to the bar in 1877 and commenced to practice law at Richmond, Missouri. Moving to Denver, Colorado in 1879, he was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1900. He also was a professor of mining law at the Law School of the University of Denver and Harvard University. In 1909, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate and served until his death.
