He was a member of the 1st Team All-Missouri Valley Conference in sophomore and senior seasons and 2nd team as a junior. He also played in senior and American Bowl Season All-Star Games and was a Physical Education Major. In 1970 he was drafted in the 2nd pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers and went on with them to play from 1970 to 1974. He was considered a great Pro Bowl Receiver and named Most Valuable Player in 1974 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his off-year in 1974 he failed to lead the team in receiving for the first time in his pro football career. In 1976 he joined the Chicago Bears. He had a career total of 144 and played in 72 games.
