CAPTAIN T. J. WATERS DIES

Octogenarian for Many Years Resident of Los Angeles Succumbs to General Breaking Down

Captain Thomas Jefferson Waters, who fought in the Civil War and who has for many years been one of the most highly respected citizens of Los Angeles, died Thursday afternoon at his residence, 2355 Scarff street. The funeral will be held from the residence this afternoon and will be private, only the members of the G. A. R. post with which Captain Waters was identified for a long time being invited to be present. Interment will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Captain Thomas Jefferson Waters was born in Lakewood county, New York, in 1831. The decedent was the father-in-law of E. T. Stimson of Los Angeles. He left a widow, a son, F. P. Waters; two nieces, Mrs. E. Gaurten and Mrs. E. Robarge, and a nephew, C. J. Waters.

Captain Waters entered Company H, Third Michigan, as a volunteer. He fought in the battles of Gettysburg and Shiloh. After the war he entered the shipping business on Lake Michigan and remained in it for twenty-five years.

In 1893 Captain Waters moved to Los Angeles and retired from business. At all times he was a well man. It was only three months ago that he was taken suddenly sick. From that time on he grew rapidly worse and death was due to a general breaking down.
